Bangladesh Betar Khulna’s (Medium Wave 537.63 Meter/106.5 FM) weekly agricultural programme called “Chasabad” is currently broadcasting a series of programmes on women’s role and participation in prawn farming.
The programme consists of four episodes highlighting women farmers’ activities in Monirampur, Jessore. The first show was aired on 4 January 2012. Three sub-sequent episodes will be broadcasted during February and March 2012. The episodes will feature the experiences of successful prawn farmers such as Monowara Begum and Nasima Khatun as well as Tapan Kumar of Chaiti Fish and Kh. Mazhabuddin Pallob, who are all involved in Katalyst intervention.
Katalyst partnered with the Department of Fisheries (DoF) and Winrock International (WI) to facilitate training for Chaiti Fish on prawn farming. Under this intervention, around 350 female farmers were trained on quality inputs such as like quality hatchery, post larvae and fish feed and prawn farming techniques. The trained farmers applied the knowledge gained from the training to increase their production from an average of 1.5kg/decimal to 2.5 kg/decimal of water body. The increase in production motivated some farmers to increase their prawn culture area. Katalyst and its co-facilitators hope that the success of these female prawn farmers will inspire more women in rural areas to take up prawn farming as a means of increase their income.
