A three-day B2B exhibition on ‘Furniture Home Accessories’ hosted by a craft reselling firm Orbachin and supported by Katalyst was held from 13-15 September, 2011 at the Drik gallery. It was inaugurated by Mr. Jalal Ahmed, Vice Chairman, Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and Mr. Selim H. Rahman, Managing Director of Hatil Ltd. was present as the special guest.
This exhibition was first of its kind to create B2B market linkage between furniture manufacturers and craft producers. Globally furniture industry is linking more with home décor to sell complete home solutions rather than just furniture. A “Export Readiness” study by international experts of consultancy firm CSIL (Centre for Industrial Studies) shows that Bangladesh has strong potential in linking home décor items with the furniture industry.
2015, Bangladesh has a potential of exporting crafts as furniture accessories worth USD10 million along with furniture worth USD40 million. Katalyst had presented the concept to the members of furniture association (export and local) and had organized visits for furniture firms to various craft clusters. Number of firms showed interest to include accessories in the product line and suggested that it would be easier if a craft reselling firm dealt with the designing and sourcing of craft accessories for them.
Orbachin has worked with a local renowned designer Chandra Shekhar Shaha and three other designers during the past eight months to develop new craft accessory products to compliment furniture. Orbachin’s product category include, hand stitched cushion covers, rugs, wooden frames, lampshades and artificial flowers.
Mr. Selim, stated that he was very happy to see so many new products at the exhibition, and supports Katalyst’s initiative to promote locally produced home accessories. Mr. Jalal praised the exhibition and offered full support to the artisans for the expansion not only in the domestic market but also in the international market.
