Brandzeal, with the support of Katalyst, organized a discussion event on the ‘Role of markets in designing and implementing agricultural extension projects’ at the DAE premises on the 8th and 9th of February. 20 Project Directors of the leading agricultural extension projects in Bangladesh were present at the event.
The purpose of the discussion was to explore and understand the present scenario and potential scope of markets in designing and implementing agricultural extension projects and to come up with recommendations for the way forward. Participants at the event identified that agricultural extension projects and other agricultural development initiatives in the future, will be involving private and other market players to a much greater extent.
Participants at the roundtable identified that reliable and timely agriculture based information can help farmers to protect themselves from potential losses, reduce costs and enjoy higher yields, resulting in increased income. They discussed that concepts such as private sector engagement and market development will need to be more actively incorporated into agricultural extension projects in order to sustainably benefit farmers. Katalyst’s initiatives of applying market development in the vegetable sector of Bangladesh were also presented at the event.
