A three member team led by Ms. Nasrin Nahar, Joint Chief, Planning Commission and other officials namely Mr. Rabiul Islam, Deputy Chief and Mr. S.M Shakil Akhter, Senior Assistant Chief from Ministry of Commerce (MoC) visited selected project interventions in Bogra, Rangpur and Gaibandha during 24-26 June 2010. The team visited four interventions i.e. irrigation, fish, Improving Local Government Services (ILGS) and ICT, three of which are government driven.
In irrigation, the low-cost irrigation system introduced by Katalyst was demonstrated. In ILGS, the team was shown the model introduced by the project where the Upazilla level BMOs, with the help of local GoB Officials are able to deliver public services at the Union level. In ICT, the GoB
team was impressed to see how the rural farmers can access information from the agriculture office using e-technology. The local GoB officials i.e. agriculture officer, UNO (Upazilla Nirbahi Officer) and SAHO (sub-assistant agriculture officer) were present during the visit for discussion with the team. The GoB officials were also pleased to learn that the local fish associations have brought new species of telapia fish under Katalyst activities.
The GoB officials reiterated that the project interventions are complementary to the efforts of GoB and contribute to the positive impact of the growing economy of Bangladesh. They further recommended that the MoC and the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) should sign a MoU and make the role of MoC more visible. They also mentioned that the project should document the implementation process of the interventions and specially its impacts for further dissemination to other interested organizations.
