Katalyst supported the launching workshop on piloting UZBMO-Samity model on 28 May, 2011 at Deputy Director Agriculture Extension (DDAE) office, Khamarbari, Bogra to orient the upazila level agriculture, fisheries and livestock officers. Md. Habibur Rahman, Director General (DG) of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) inaugurated the workshop.
Under the Improving Local Government Services (ILGS) programme, Katalyst developed the UZBMO-Samity model where Upazila level Business Membership Organizations (UZBMOs) form farmer samities and link them with the local extension offices. ILGS aims to complement regular extension channels by facilitating the formation of UZBMO-Samity network and Public Private Initiative (PPI) at local level. PPI is a sector based forum where relevant extension officials, farmer and private sector representatives regularly meet, discuss and address sectoral issues on resource sharing basis.
The DG, DAE mentioned that the UZBMO-Samity network and the PPI will assist the upazila extension officials to reach more farmers with the existing resources. With the help of the private sector, agriculture extension services and information will be extended to reach the poorest in remote areas. The extension officers of piloting upazila appreciated the concept of the model and expressed their interest to implement it in their respective upazilas.
