A task force comprising of officials from Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Department of Fisheries (DoF) and Department of Livestock Services (DLS) visited Improving Local Government Services (ILGS) program of Katalyst in Pirgachha and Gangachara of Rangpur district on 30 December 2010.
The task force had been formed for the implementation of a government led pilot program in 20 Upazilas out of 116, where Katalyst’s UZBMO-Samity model will be replicated. The UZBMO-Samity network developed under the ILGS program has facilitated the local government agencies to have a wider outreach.
The task force members visited UZBMO, Upazila Extension Offices and farmer samities in the Pirgachha and Gangachara Upazilas. During the visit, farmers shared their thoughts about the benefits they received after being a member of UZBMO i.e. trainings and workshops arranged by the UZBMO as well as the brochures, leaflets published by them on agricultural issues, which helped their yield to go up. The beneficiaries also mentioned that UZBMO-Samity channel has made the communication easier for the extension officers in these areas.
The local government officers of the respective Upazila shared their experiences and acknowledged the benefits of Public Private Initiatives (PPIs) established under the ILGS program. The task force appreciated the model as it successfully created a complementary channel for local government service delivery.
