A Taskforce comprising of officials from Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Department of Fisheries (DoF) and Department of Livestock Services (DLS) concluded their second field visit and ToR signing for the Improving Local Government Services (ILGS) program of Katalyst in Sylhet during 29 and 30 March, 2011.
The field visit included discussions with traders and farmers from Balagonj and Bishwanath Upazilas in Sylhet region. The local government officers of the respective Upazilas were present during the event and approved of the ILGS program in facilitating greater outreach of extension services.
The taskforce appreciated the UZBMO-Samity model citing the sustainability of the network and provided recommendations to ensure greater benefits for the farmers in the ILGS program.
The ToR was agreed upon unanimously and signed by the taskforce during their second quarterly meeting with co-facilitator Intercooperation (IC) and Katalyst at the IDEA office, a partner NGO, on 30 March, 2011. The members also selected 20 upazilas for the government-led pilot and created an annual workplan of activities for implementation. The DoF members were elected to lead the taskforce on a rotation basis with other members.
The ILGS program aims to complement the regular extension channel by facilitating the formation of the UZBMO-Samity network and is currently implemented in 74 Upazilas. The interagency government taskforce has been formed to conduct a government led pilot of the UZBMO-Samity model in 20 Upazilas. Upon successful completion of the pilot initiative, the task force will develop a strategy paper to recommend government implementation of the model in other areas of the country.
