A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Katalyst and the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) on 28 April 2010. Mrs. Hosne Ara, Director (Agriculture), BJRI and Mr. Shahroz Jalil, Director, Services, Katalyst signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations.
The objective of this partnership is to disseminate the BJRI invented retting technologies to the jute farmers in Bangladesh. Both Katalyst and BJRI believe that spreading the retting technologies among the jute farmers in the field would not only improve the quality of jute fibers but it will also help the jute farmers to better cope with water scarcity.
The honorable chief guest Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin stated that he believes that, from golden fiber, jute is destined to become the diamond fiber of Bangladesh. He also stressed that in the face of climate change, there is a need for further research on water for jute retting. Mrs. Hosne Ara expressed her gratitude to Katalyst for taking up the initiative of promoting improved retting technologies. Mr. Shahroz Jalil mentioned that the lives of the poor people engaged in the jute sector will also improve. Mr. Md. Asaduzzaman, urged private entrepreneurs to come forward and make use of the technologies for greater value addition.
Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin, Director General, BJRI, was the chief guest in the ceremony. Among others, Mr. Md. Asaduzzaman, Director (Technology), Mr. Mujibur Rahman, Chief Scientific Officer (Agriculture), and Md. AKM Farukuzzaman, Chief Scientific Officer (Planning, training and Communication) and Ms. Fouzia Nasreen, Director, Rural Sectors, Katalyst were also present at the ceremony.
