Katalyst and GMark Consulting Limited jointly organized a workshop on “Prospects of Integrated Pest Management in Bangladesh” on 4 February 2010 to disseminate and validate findings of a recent study and develop strategic direction to establish an effective role of IPM in benefiting farmers as an environment friendly pest management technology.
The participants in the workshop agreed that IPM is necessary for the betterment of the farmers who suffer the most from inappropriate usage of pesticides.
The group also mentioned that key constraints like legal barriers of registration of IPM products for commercial selling must be removed to attract private sector and other pesticides companies to come forward and promote environment friendly pest management products more useful to the farmers and less harmful on the environment. Further research in the area is another important factor identified in the workshop that needs attention. The current IPM product range is quite limited and as a result can not provide pest management solution against many pest attacks.
Mr. Sawkat Momen Shajahan, Honorable MP and Chairman of parliamentary standing committee was the Chief Guest in the workshop and Mr. Md. Hasanul Haque, Director Plant protection wing of Department of Agricultural Extension was present as the special guest. Other high officials from different government, non-government and private organizations including farmers and IPM product retailers were also present in the workshop and shared their opinions and thoughts in an open discussion session.
