Katalyst and Traidcraft have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on September 2, 2010 to build capacity and create market opportunity for the Jute Diversified Product Producers (JDPPs). Given the wide possibilities for jute diversified products, Katalyst and Traidcraft will work together to increase the competitiveness of the Jute Sector that shows promises of employment of a large labour force in Bangladesh.
There are around 250 small and medium sized JDPPs in Bangladesh who mainly produce jute handicrafts, lifestyle products, geo-textile, agro textile, apparels, pulp and paper. The JDPPs mostly sell their products to the contractors who further export them in the international market.
However, the JDPPs do not have appropriate skill and adequate information on the latest trends and designs of the export market.
Therefore, Katalyst and Traidcraft join hands in building the capacities of JDPPs and making them more competitive to meet the demands and standards of diversified jute products for the international markets.
Traidcraft is a trading company and development charity that fights against poverty through trade and promotes approaches that help to transform lives of the poor in the developing countries. It strives to build lasting relationships with producers, supports people to trade out of poverty and works to bring about trade justice. Katalyst and Traidcraft will jointly conduct a research to identify demand and supply side issues. Based on the opportunity derived both organizations will design steps for further implementation.
Mr. Goetz Ebbecke, General Manager, Katalyst and Mr. Kazi Shahed H Ferdous, Country Director, Traidcraft signed the MoU.
