A six member team from Katalyst, Bangladesh Institute of ICT in Development (BIID), Amader Gram, WIN Inc and Swisscontact participated in a session titled “Bangladesh Innovation & Experiences: Making ICT Work for Rural Farmers and Entrepreneurs” at the World Summit on Information System (WSIS) Forum at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Headquarters, Geneva from 10-14 May 2010.
The session focused on the progress of Bangladesh in implementing ICT for development initiatives and its contribution to the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This session was moderated by His Excellency Md. Abdul Hannan,The Ambassador of Bangladesh in Switzerland.
The presenters showcased various ICT initiatives involving tele-centres, mobile telephony approaches under public-private partnership where agricultural information are being disseminated to the farmers in rural Bangladesh. In the concluding remarks, His Excellency Mr. Hannan acknowledged that, these initiatives are supporting to build an inclusive information society in Bangladesh. Ms. Gitanjali Sah from ITU also shared that such initiatives from Bangladesh could be replicated in other countries.
During the forum, the visiting team also participated an exhibition of global ICT endeavors. Different ICT based initiatives of Katalyst were showcased at the exhibition which drew interest from many other participants who wanted to know more about Katalyst’s interventions on ICT. A global platform like WSIS provides the unique opportunity to showcase Katalyst’s ICT related work to relevant stakeholders from all over the world. Katalyst has been participating in the WSIS Forum for last three years.
