Katalyst, Winrock International and Charoen Pokphand (CP) Bangladesh have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 22 September 2010 to work jointly in promoting maize production in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) to improve the lives of the poor farmers.
Maize has been cultivated in CHT for human consumption mainly by the ‘Jhum’ cultivation technique for many years.
To meet Bangladesh’s growing demand for maize, Katalyst, Winrock International and CP Bangladesh are planning to eastablish mechanisms to promote commercial maize cultivation in the CHT. Under the MoU, CP with support from Katalyst and Winrock will ensure farmers’ access to proper knowledge on cultivation practices, access to quality inputs and linkage to markets. By including commercial cultivation of maize in the crop cycle, it is expected that the CHT farmers will earn more than their existing income.
The MoU was signed by Mr. Goetz Ebbecke, General Manager, Katalyst, Dr. P.K. Barua, Team Leader, Winrock International and Mr. Boonchuay Phungtua-eng, Assistant Vice President, C.P. Bangladesh.
