Katalyst and Winrock International signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading sea food exporter Gemini Sea Food Ltd on 1 November 2010 at Gemcon Group Office, Dhaka. The objective of the MoU is to develop an effective procurement system that will increase the production of prawn.
This procurement system will aid Gemini Sea Food to increase the procurement of quality raw materials and help to address other related significant compliance issues such as traceability, food safety and health safety for the processing plant workers. Gemini Sea Food Ltd is part of Gemcon group which sells frozen food in the international markets by branding themselves as “MEENA” and “GEMINI”.
In addition to Gemini Sea Food Ltd, Gemcon group also operates retail outlet ‘Meena Bazar’, ‘University of Liberal Arts’ (ULAB), ‘GEM Jute Mill’, organic tea garden ‘Kazi & Kazi Tea Estate’, and ‘Castle Construction’ etc.
Kazi Inam Ahmed, Chief Executive Officer, Gemini Sea Food Ltd, told during the signing ceremony that they have an objective to train the farmers with the vision of long term return and sustainability.
Dr. P.K Barua, Team Leader Winrock International and M. Mustaque Amin, Chief Operation Officer of Gemini Sea Food Ltd signed the MoU on behalf of prawn market team and Gemini Sea Food Ltd respectively. Katalyst’s Director of Industry and Rural Division, Christian Portal was also present during the ceremony.
