Market Development Forum (MDF) in collaboration with Katalyst hosted an interactive discussion to explore how the concepts of market system can be related to Private Sector Development initiatives. It is generally accepted that markets are complex systems and that we need to plan, implement and measure our interventions using the ‘lenses’ of complexity and systems.
Mr. Luis E. Lucho Osorio-Cortes, International Market Systems Specialist from Practical Action, UK facilitated a discussion session reflecting on some of the basic components of a complex system.
Mr. Lucho has been involved with Making Markets Work for the Jamuna, Pabna and Teesta Chars (M4C) for Swisscontact and SDC in Bangladesh. He is also the facilitator for the Market Facilitation Initiative (MaFI) Working Group for the SEEP (Small Enterprise Education and Promotion) Network.
Among the participants were officials of Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Swisscontact, International Development Enterprises (iDE) Bangladesh, Char Livelihood Project (CLP) and Action for Enterprise (AFE). The discussion comprised of a video presentation on “Understanding Complexity” by Prof. Scott E. Page, professor of Complex Systems, Political Science, and Economics, the University of Michigan followed by an open discussion and question & answer session.
