Mr. Muhammad Faruk Khan, MP, the Honourable Commerce Minister called upon the Members of the Advisory Panel (AP) of Katalyst to extend technical support to the Ministry of Commerce to address the issues of price volatility and comprehensive trade policy.
The Minister requested for information based market management which will help him and the policy makers constantly about the explanation of the price distortion of the essential commodities.
He is keen for a balance of rational price amongst producers, traders and consumers. The Ministry of Commerce is also interested in formulating a long term comprehensive trade policy to address the issues of anomalies in the different policies of the Government. The Minister requested the panel to come up with a pragmatic plan within 15 days and to implement it by June 2010.
Dr. Selim Raihan, Coordinator of the AP delineated the view of the AP to the Minister and assured him to provide the necessary technical support to the Ministry of Commerce to address the issues of price volatility and comprehensive trade policy.
Mr. James Blewett, explained the role of AP to work with the Ministry of Commerce to further enhance the alignment of the work between the Ministry and Katalyst.
The meeting was held on 8 December at the Conference Room of the Ministry. The AP members present were Dr. Selim Raihan and Dr. Kh. Bazlul Haque, Department of Economics, University of Dhaka, Dr. Nazneen Ahmed, BIDS and Dr. Kh. Golam Moazzem, CPD, Syed Nasim Manzur, Managing Director, Apex Adelchi Footwear Limited. Among other high officials, Mr. Mustafa Mohiuddin, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Mr. James Blewett, General Manger, Katalyst and Mr. Emdadul Haque, Director, Extrernal Relations, Katalyst and Mr. Martin Godau, Group Director, Business Enabling Environment, Katalyst also attended the meeting.
The AP was formed with the approval of the Ministry of Commerce on 12 November 2009.
