University of Dhaka launches 2nd Edition of Agriculture Journalism Guidebook in partnership with Katalyst

Katalyst in partnership with University of Dhaka and Chandrabati Academy has published the 2nd edition of “Krishi Shangabadikota” (Agriculture Journalism) on 27th March, 2016 at Dhaka University Senate Hall. The book will be used as the reading material for the Agriculture Journalism course launched by the Department of Television and Film Studies, in partnership with Katalyst. Hasanul Haq Inu, Minister of Information Ministry, Government of Bangladesh graced the occasion as Chief Guest while Dr. Golam Rahman, Chief Information Commissioner of Government of Bangladesh was present as Special guest in the book launching ceremony. The event was chaired by AAMS Arefin Siddiqui, Vice Chancellor of University of Dhaka and moderated by Dr. AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, Chairman, Department of Television and Film Studies, University of Dhaka.

The ever-growing need for agriculture “beat” in both print and broadcast media has always demanded young and aspiring journalist with necessary understanding on agriculture and journalism. Though the academic institutions offer mass and communication journalism course, it did not meet the requirements needed to educate the students on relevant agro journalism skills. Various research also indicated that farmers demand more agriculture information from various media channels. As a result of the demand of the farmers and the media sector itself, Katalyst partnered with University of Dhaka to develop and launch agriculture journalism in Department of Television and Film Studies.  The “Krishi Shanbadikota” book has been revised and edited by Professor Dr. AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan in the form of an academic book, which will allow the faculties to use this book for the course. The book covers different aspects of agriculture such as impact of climate change in agriculture, women’s contribution in agriculture, role of NGO in agriculture, progress in biotechnology and an overall market scenario of agriculture. Sector specific experts, academicians, journalists and researchers have contributed to the content of the book.
