EDGE Consulting and Katalyst organised a workshop titled “Facts sharing and Exploratory Workshop on Maize Based Starch Industry in Bangladesh” on 28 June. Katalyst commissioned the study to EDGE with the primary objective to analyse the starch market in Bangladesh and the prospect of maize based starch production in Bangladesh.
Such a market study is the first of its kind in Bangladesh. EDGE team identified several industries, which play a critical role in the overall demand of starch in Bangladesh, and consulted with these industry players to develop a scenario of the demand side. On the other hand the manufacturers of starch including maize starch were consulted and in-depth interviews were conducted to identify the overall supply side scenario. EDGE also identified and analysed data from the major market actors within the starch value chain. All these helped to acquire the market scenario and the potentiality of maize based starch in Bangladesh.
Khairul Islam, CEO of EDGE Consulting and the team leader for the study presented the study findings and moderated the discussion session with the major market actors present at the workshop. Representatives from Katalyst, the pharmaceuticals textile, packaging, food, starch manufacturers were present at the workshop. They validated the study findings and contributed in enhancing the understanding of the current scenario and potential of maize based starch market. The domestic starch market is poised at around 73000 MT with majority of the demand being covered through imports. The local maize based starch manufacturing industry is growing but needs to invest in research.
