Katalyst organised a workshop entitled “Mini packets of quality vegetable seeds: reaching small farmers with better inputs” in association with Action for Enterprise (AFE), on 3 October 2012, at the Ruposhi Bangla Hotel in Dhaka.
Seed is a key agricultural input and its quality has a significant effect on crop yields. The availability of quality seed in mini packets has helped thousands of small and marginal farmers to access seed at an affordable price.
In the workshop, Katalyst and Lal Teer Seed showcased the fact that mini packets of quality vegetable seed are not only beneficial for farmers, but also present a potentially successful business venture for seed companies.
Mr Tabith Awal, Director of Lal Teer Seed, explained that Lal Teer produced seed mini packets so that small and marginal farmers can easily access quality seeds and thus improve their agricultural production.
Mr Anwar Faruqe, Additional Secretary and Director General, Ministry of Agriculture, congratulated the private companies in their endeavor and expressed his optimism that the distribution of mini packets of quality seeds will improve as more private companies are encouraged to come forward.
Other guests at the workshop were: Mr. F R Malik, President Bangladesh Seed Association; Dr. Mahbubur Rahman, DGM AR Malik; and, Mr. Mujibul Hasan, Director, Katalyst.
